A Deep Breath at the Window to the World
A Month to Celebrate Being Yourself
June is known as Pride Month—a time when people around the world come together to reflect on the rights of LGBTQ+ communities and to celebrate diversity. In Tokyo, events such as Tokyo Pride bring color to the streets, with rainbow flags and vibrant decorations that many of you may have seen in the news. These scenes quietly convey a growing awareness of the importance of valuing each person’s uniqueness.
As a parent of two children, I often find myself reflecting on how much school life has changed since my own childhood. The ways in which children address and relate to each other have evolved, and there are now more opportunities to choose school supplies and uniforms in ways that suit each individual. Each morning, as I see my children off, the colorful row of randoseru backpacks on their backs looks like a small rainbow—gently reminding me that diversity is something close to us, woven into our everyday lives.
At Ibaraki University, we place great importance on respecting diversity and fostering an environment free from prejudice, discrimination, and harassment. We strive to be a place where everyone connected to the university can feel safe, bring out their strengths, and live each day in a way that feels true to themselves. The Office of Equality and Diversity also hopes to offer support in ways that are close to everyday life as we work toward this goal.
