バンクーバーへの実験の旅
たまたま秋にばかりバンクーバーを訪れていて、きりっとした空気と紅葉のグラデーションが印象に残っています。物質内部でのミクロな物理現象を観測するために「ミュオン」という素粒子を使っていますが、この実験ができるのは日本、イギリス、スイス、カナダの４ヵ国しかありません。その1つがバンクーバー郊外にあるTRIUMF、歴史ある国立加速器研究所です。水戸の研究室で学生らと一緒に頑張って合成した新物質を現地に持ち込み、研究所のスタッフにお手伝い頂きながら実験に挑みます。学生も装置のセッティングや操作、測定のプログラム組みなどをさせてもらいます。実験は昼夜土日問わず続けます。貴重な機会なので時間を無駄にできませんから、うまくいかないと徹夜に近い作業になることも。幸い実験がうまく走り始めれば自動測定にして街に出かけることもできます。ヨットハーバーと高層ビル群を眺めながらシーフードを頂くのはバンクーバーらしいひと時でしょうか。一方、「人種のモザイク」とも呼ばれる街。タイ、マレーシア、ベトナム、インド、中華、中東、和食などの各国料理。何でもあって、どれも美味しい。難点は大変な物価高と量が多すぎることです。余裕のある時はスーパーで食材を買い出し、宿舎のキッチンで調理するのもよい。ビールやワインも。このような感じで、実験が走り始めれば1週間〜10日程度の滞在はあっという間です。明解だったり難解だったり、時には凡庸なことも、とにかくそれまでこの世に存在しなかったデータが生まれる瞬間に立ち会えるのが実験の醍醐味です。それらを日本に持ち帰り、解析、考察、議論を幾重にも重ねて一定の結論を出し、学位論文、学術論文をまとめてやっと、1つの旅が終わった気持ちになります。

A Deep Breath at the Window to the World
Research Trip to Vancouver
I recently seem to find myself visiting Vancouver in the autumn. What stays with me is the crisp air and the beautiful gradations of the changing leaves.
To observe microscopic physical phenomena inside matter, we use elementary particles called muons. There are only four countries in the world where these experiments can be conducted: Japan, the UK, Switzerland, and Canada. One of these locations is TRIUMF, a historic national particle accelerator center located on the outskirts of Vancouver.
We bring new materials—synthesized with great effort alongside my students in our laboratory in Mito—to this facility. There, with the support of the local staff, we are taking on the experiment. My students also gain hands-on experience, from setting up and operating the equipment to writing measurement programs.
The experiments run non-stop, day and night, through the weekends. Because this is such a precious opportunity, we cannot afford to waste a single moment. If things don’t go as planned, it can mean working through the night. Fortunately, once the experiment is running smoothly, we can switch to automated measurements and head into the city. Enjoying seafood while overlooking the yacht harbor and the skyline is a quintessentially Vancouver moment.
Vancouver is a city often called a "Mosaic of Cultures." From Thai, Malaysian, and Vietnamese to Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Japanese—every kind of cuisine is available, and it is all delicious. The only downsides are the high cost and the overwhelming portion sizes. When time permits, it’s nice to buy ingredients at a supermarket and cook in the guest house kitchen, perhaps with a glass of beer or wine.
In this way, once the experiments are underway, a ten-day stay passes in the blink of an eye. Whether the results are crystal clear, bafflingly complex, or sometimes even mundane, the true thrill of an experiment is witnessing the birth of data that has never existed in this world before.
Only after bringing those results back to Japan—through layers of analysis, contemplation, and discussion to reach a conclusion and finally completing a thesis or paper—do I truly feel that this "journey" has come to an end.
