異国の雨の光景（下）
2007年9月、中国杭州市で開かれたサステイナビリティ学シンポジウムに参加した。この2年前に東京大学が「サステイナビリティ学連携研究機構（IR3S）」を発足させ、茨城大学も参加していた。このシンポは、IR3Sと浙江大学の国際連携イベントだった。中国に出発するに当たって、菊池龍三郎学長にこれに参加することを報告した。杭州市には西湖という歴史の舞台となった湖がある。菊池先生は、即座に西湖には雨をうたった有名な詩があると紹介して下さった。
「湖上にうたげせしが、 初めは晴れ後は雨降れり」 蘇軾
水光 瀲灔（れんえん）として 晴れてまさに好し
山色 空濛（くうもう）として 雨もまた奇なり
西湖をとって西子に比せんと欲すれば
淡粧 濃抹 すべてあい宜し
西子とは春秋時代の有名な女性西施のことだそうだが、千年の時を超えて、雨による風景の変化を美しい人の化粧にたとえたのだという。こんな詩を知れば西湖を見ないわけにはいかない。そして、シンポジウムの朝・・・煙るような雨が降ったのである。その中で西湖の湖岸を歩いた。
西湖は中国の水墨画の原風景の一つだった。日本とは違うが、また別の深い趣を持っており、それを愛でる心は中国文化の中に根付いているに違いない。サステイナビリティは21世紀の重要課題である。シンポジウムでは、日中双方の大学が報告し議論を交わした。一方、熱い議論の合間に雨の西湖を歩き、国それぞれに文化の長い積み重ねがあることを思った。雨には人の心を豊かにする効果があるのかも知れない。雨もまた好しである。

A Deep Breath at the Window to the World
Rainy Scenes in Foreign Countries（Part 3）
In September 2007, I attended a Sustainability Science Symposium held at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Two years earlier, the University of Tokyo had established the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), and Ibaraki University was one of its participating universities. The symposium was organized as an international event of IR3S.
Before leaving for China, I informed President Ryuzaburo Kikuchi of my participation. Hangzhou City is home to the historic West Lake. President Kikuchi immediately told me that there was a famous poem celebrating the beauty of the lake in the rain.
The poem, written by the Song Dynasty poet Su Shi, reads:
The shimmering waters are most beautiful in sunshine,
The misty mountains are also extraordinary in rain.
If one were to compare the West Lake to the beauty Xi Shi,
Light or heavy makeup, both become her well.
Xi Shi was a legendary beauty of ancient China. The poem compares the changing scenery of West Lake to the beauty of a woman’s varying makeup. After hearing such a poem, I could not leave Hangzhou without seeing the lake myself. Then, on the morning of the symposium, a misty rain was falling! I walked along the shore of West Lake in that rain.
West Lake seemed to embody one of the archetypal landscapes of Chinese ink painting. Although it differs from Japan, it possesses a profound and distinctive atmosphere. The sentiment of loving such scenery must be deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Sustainability is one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century. At the symposium, universities from both Japan and China presented their research and engaged in lively discussions. In a break of these exchanges, I walked along West Lake in the rain and reflected on how each country carries its own layers of culture and history. Rain may have the effect of enriching the human mind. Yes, rain is also pleasant.
