A Deep Breath at the Window to the World

Knowing contentment

About a year ago, I started taking yoga lessons—in a very relaxed way—as a means to lose weight.

Yoga originated in ancient India and involves not just physical movement, but also breathing techniques and meditation. (That said, I personally enjoy the physical aspect, so I focus almost exclusively on practicing the poses.)

I have a competitive streak, so when I first started, I was determined to perform the poses better than the people around me. I would even push myself to attempt poses I couldn't quite manage, ignoring the pain.

However, my instructor shared a teaching called "Santosha," which means "contentment" or "knowing what is enough." She told us, "It’s okay if you can’t perform a pose perfectly right now. Accept that where you are at this moment is enough, and be grateful for the opportunity to practice yoga."

Since then, I feel my mindset has shifted; instead of comparing myself to others, I’ve learned to focus on "who I am right now."

I used to get discouraged at work by comparing myself to others, but after hearing my instructor's words, I’ve started accepting my current situation and focusing on doing the best I can in the present moment.
It really made me realize that yoga brings about changes not just in the body, but in one's mindset as well.

Yoga classes always conclude with "Namaste," a traditional Indian greeting. Following that custom, I’d like to wrap up this post with "Namaste" as well.

Hands pressed together at the heart.
With gratitude for who I am right now.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Namaste
