A Deep Breath at the Window to the World
A Story About Bananas
One of the joys of traveling abroad is the food, but these days, it’s become easy to enjoy cuisines from around the world right here in Japan.
Even so, there are some foods whose true flavor can only be experienced by visiting the place of origin.
That would be “tropical fruits.”
Due to the Plant Protection Act, you can’t easily bring fresh fruit back to Japan. Of course, some fruits are imported through proper channels, but they simply can’t compare to the freshness of fruit picked right off the tree and eaten on the spot.
In that sense, trying tropical fruits locally—even ones you can find in Japan—leads to new discoveries and makes your trip even more interesting.
If you ever have the chance to visit a tropical region, it might come as a surprise, but my recommendation is the banana. While bananas in Japan are harvested and shipped while still green, the taste of bananas that have ripened fully on the tree in their native regions is exceptional. There are a wide variety of cultivars rarely seen in Japan, each offering a unique flavor. Another appealing aspect is that there’s little variation in quality—no matter which one you try, they’re almost always delicious. The banana in the photo, for example, has a firm, juicy texture and an indescribable sweetness.
By the way, most of the bananas we usually eat aren’t propagated from seeds but are grown as clones of the parent plant—that is, through division. As a result, there isn’t much genetic diversity, so if a specific disease spreads, the entire variety could suffer massive damage all at once, and some varieties are even at risk of extinction. Delicious bananas are actually quite delicate creatures.
Have a great weekend.
