涼やかな風――台湾・日月潭のキャンパスを訪ねて
少し前のことになりますが（この国際コラムを始めるにあたって、いくつかの思い出の地をゆっくりたどっています）、今から2年ほど前、日本・台湾大学学長フォーラムが、台湾の避暑地としても知られる日月潭（にちげつたん）にある国立曁南国際大学（きなん）で開催されました。
日月潭は、台湾のほぼ中央、山々に囲まれた南投県に位置しています。台湾最大の淡水湖であり、その名の通り、湖の形が太陽と月を思わせることから「日月潭」と呼ばれています。標高はおよそ750メートル。深い緑に囲まれ夏でも空気がひんやりと心地よく、まるで天然のクーラーのよう。
曁南国際大学のキャンパスは、緑豊かな自然とともにある、落ち着いた学びの空間がなにより魅力的に感じます。都市の喧騒から離れ、学生たちはそれぞれ思い思いの場所でくつろいだり語り合ったりしていて、どこかのびやかな雰囲気が漂っていました。整った国際学生寮もあり、ここでの暮らしが心地よく続いていくことが想像できました。
この大学には、ちょっとした気になる存在もいます。全身をうろこ状の皮膚で包まれた不思議でかわいらしい野生動物――穿山甲（センザンコウ）。アルマジロにも似たこの動物は、大学のキャラクターとしても親しまれていて、もしかしたら森の中でひょっこり出会えるかもしれません。
湖畔を歩きながら、ふと立ち止まって、風の音に耳をすませてみる、リラックスするように知を探求できる場所、機会があればもう一度訪れてみたい日月潭（にちげつたん）でした。

A Deep Breath at the Window to the World
A Gentle Breeze — Visiting the Campus by Taiwan’s Sun Moon Lake
This may be a story from a little while ago (as I begin this column, I’m retracing some of the places that left a lasting impression), but about two years ago, the Japan–Taiwan University Presidents’ Forum was held at National Chi Nan University, located near Sun Moon Lake, a well-known summer retreat in Taiwan.
Sun Moon Lake sits in Nantou County, surrounded by mountains in the central part of the island. It is the largest freshwater lake in Taiwan, and its name comes from its shape, one part resembles the sun, the other the moon. At an altitude of about 750 meters, the lake is embraced by lush greenery, and even in the summer, the air remains cool and refreshing, like a natural air conditioner.
The campus of Chi Nan University blends beautifully with this natural environment. It offers a calm, grounded space for learning. Far from the hustle and bustle of city life, students can be seen chatting or relaxing in their favorite spots across the campus, creating a serene and open atmosphere. With well-equipped international dormitories, it’s easy to imagine how comfortably one could settle into life here.
The university also has a charming resident—or rather, a small, mysterious presence that catches your attention: the pangolin, a wild animal covered in scale-like armor, somewhat resembling an armadillo. It’s a beloved symbol of the campus, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot one wandering through the forest.
As I walked along the lakeside, I found myself pausing to listen to the wind through the trees. Sun Moon Lake is the kind of place where you can quietly explore knowledge while feeling truly at ease.
If I have the chance, I would love to return to that tranquil, thoughtful corner of the world once again.
