Admission for International Students

Ibaraki University accepts international students for admission to undergraduate and graduate schools and various other programs. Our classes and research are in the Japanese language with some exceptions. Choose the course that suits your needs, including the purpose of your study and the length of your stay.

Admission to the Department (Baccalaureate degree program)

All classes at Ibaraki University's department are in the Japanese language. Application procedures and entrance exams for undergraduates are also in the Japanese language. Applicants must meet the requirements of nationality, residence status, school curriculum, Japan study abroad examination administered by the Japan Student Services Organization, and private English language examination (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS). The fulfillment of these requirements makes it possible for you to apply for the entrance examination. The enrollment to the undergraduate school takes place in April.

Admission to Master’s program

Most classes and studies in the master's program at Ibaraki University are in the Japanese language, but the Course in Applied Asian Agriculture at the Graduate School of Agriculture is also in the English language, and the course is positive to accept international. Application procedures and entrance examinations (writing and interviews) for each class except Course in Applied Asian Agriculture are in the Japanese language. The timing and process of the entrance examinations will differ depending on the graduate school, so please check the recruitment guidelines of the desired graduate school.

Admission to Doctoral program

Ibaraki University offers doctoral programs at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and United Graduate School of Agriculture Science. Classes and research in the doctoral course are not only in the Japanese language but also in the English language upon request. Application procedures and entrance examinations (writing and interviews) can also be in the English language. The timing and process of the entrance examinations will differ depending on the graduate school, so please check the application guidelines of the desired graduate school.

Admission as a Research Student

Ibaraki University accepts students as research students who study specific subjects under the guidance of our university researchers. The research student's enrollment period is generally less than one year. If you wish to apply for research students, you need to consult with the researcher of your desire to receive guidance before obtaining an application. The enrollment period for research students varies depending on the undergraduate and graduate school, so please check the application guidelines for the desired undergraduate and graduate school. Research students can receive additional Japanese language classes at the Center for Global Education if they have permission from their supervisor.

Admission as a course student (Credited Auditors)

Course students can take one or more course subjects offered by Ibaraki University as "Credited Auditors." Course students can earn credits if the student takes class subjects and completes certain grades in exams. Course students are eligible to get enrolled as course students for one year. Please confirm the admission schedule and application method in the admission guide for the desired undergraduate or graduate school. Also, it is limited to domestic residents.
Also, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences do not accept proxy applications for applying for the Certificate of Eligibility for Status of Residence.

Exchange study abroad

University students who have a student exchange agreement with Ibaraki University can exchange for one semester (April-August or September-February) or one year. Exchange students of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are eligible to attend. For those who have not studied Japanese or beginners, there is the Ibaraki Japanese Language and Culture Program, which helps you to understand Japanese culture and society while learning Japanese. Government expenses study abroad

There is a system called the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagaku-sho: MEXT). Ibaraki University accepts international students at the Japanese Studies Students -NIKKENSEI-, Japan Korea Joint Exchange Program and Teacher training course for international students.
