The University Library mainly functions as a supporting facility for education,
research, survey, and learning activities, for students and teaching staff.
However, it is also aimed to respond to the activities and requests in and
out of the university, such as the diversification and popularization (through
multimedia) of academic information, the effort into lifelong education, opening
to the local community, and university reforms.
Moreover, it has a role as the base of academic information and an oasis for
the academically is essential for various academic activities and the nurturing
of rich personalities.
The University Library consists of the Main Library (Mito Campus), the Hitachi
Branch (Engineering), and the Ami Branch (Agriculture), and each are located
in the center of the campus.
They are open during the week, as well as the weekends, providing services
suited to today's information-orientated society, such as lending of the books;
operation of the online catalogue, OPAC, for the users of the University Library;
document search using the nation-wide academic network; retrieval of documents
by various databases, or by CD-ROM's; and management of the website for the
University Library.
Furthermore, a broad collection of information related to university reforms
is put together and introduced in the 'Materials for University Reform' section,
while setting up the 'Liberal Arts Education' section, which supports new
types of liberal arts education.
